The BEAST: Dammit, Gannet, We Hate You - folding of the Buffalo Current in 2005
Rochester Insider was a free weekly publication from the Democrat & Chronicle, part of the Gannett newspaper chain, to target hard-to-reach readers in the 18-to-34 demographic who have thus far mostly shunned other forms of print media. Insider made its debut in February 2004, and as of mid-2005 Gannett had rolled out free weeklies in approximately 10 markets across the country. Although Gannett has shuttered at least one of its new launches in the first 18 months of operation, Insider has achieved significant readership reach already according to market research.
On June 24. 2011 Gannett shuttered the weekly, replacing it with the ROCWeekend section of the Democrat & Chronicle. The website remains, however.
Discussion
Critics have charged that the chain's free weeklies are a transparent attempt to put other free weeklies out of business, but one would be hard-pressed to document ways in which Insider attempts to go head-to-head with the slightly-left-leaning City Newspaper or the personality-deficient Freetime Magazine other than the fact that all have substantial events calendars.
