History
Once a large community, Gates is one of the smallest towns in Monroe County. It surrendered land for the formation of Greece in the 1800s and had numerous parcels annexed by the City of Rochester over the years. The town was founded as Northampton in 1802, and its name was changed 11 years later in honor of Gen. Horatio Gates (Wikipedia).
