This page documents RocWiki actions and procedures to manage its Orphans as well as providing a place to discuss the content on Orphaned Pages. Remember that comments can contain wiki markup. As always, we ask that you review our etiquette page. We encourage you to keep our Orphanage empty by creating wiki links to newly created pages. Check out the techniques documented below - your help is always welcome !!! |

BAD PAGE NAMES
Adoption Techniques
-
Link from Category List: find (or create) an appropriate category list (see Shopping, Nonprofit Organizations, Companies, etc) and add the page name to the list.
-
Include Files: create an "Include" reference list on the Talk page of the including page or via a link in the page itself - putting a link on the page makes it accessible to link to for editing. Caution: wiki links within headers do not operate as expected.
-
Adoption via Comments: To eliminate some orphans that had an active original author or were user subpages Brad added comments on the User pages as follows:
-
Preserving Revision History for Deleted Pages: when deleting old page names where the page name is not useful as an alternate redirect name, such as misspellings, it is very helpful to preserve the revision history which is only available under the old page name.
-
Prior to deleting the old page, go to its Info page and copy the URL from the browser URL window. For example
-
Go to (or create) the Talk page for the current correct pagename and place a URL link to the old name using the URL saved above. For example
-
Now delete the incorrectly named page. It will no longer be exposed as a RocWiki page to outside search engines, etc. but the revision history, under the bad name, will be preserved for documentation and research purposes.
-
For Another Example: - on Web Services/Talk you will find: "Originally created as web design - old page name deleted after documenting it here."
-
Orphan Redirect
-
Renamed Pages - when you rename a page and fix all the links to the new page you cause the original page name to become an orphan redirect, a redirect page with no links to it. If the old page name is not a useful top level reference for RocWiki, then see 'Preserving Revision History for Deleted Pages above to delete the page and yet preserve any useful revision history for the page.
-
Alternate Redirects: when you create an alternate page name with a redirect you will also create an orphan redirect.
-
Fixing Orphan Redirects:
-
Wiki link the alternate name within the redirected page using AKA or other such references. CN Tower example:
The '''CN Tower''' (aka ["Toronto Tower"])
adopts the alternate redirect named Toronto Tower
-
Add text and wiki links elsewhere on the page or on the Talk page to document multiple redirects from page combinations, etc. where the original page names are useful redirects.
Hi, you have hereby ADOPTED your original ["SomeOrphanPage"],
which is not otherwise linked to (;>)
This made the page disappear from the Orphan pages list and put it back on the owner or original author to decide what to do with it. Of course, they can delete the comment and it comes back to haunt us (;>{

2011-10-05 08:00:09 I just de-orphaned a whole bunch. Mostly I just had to find the appropriate category. —EileenF
