Montana Mills was a fresh bread store franchise that began in Rochester. Featuring large, round loaves of bread baked fresh on the premises, as well as generous free samples, Montana Mills grew quickly from an initial store in Pittsford to around 30 stores in the Northeast.
In 2003, the company was acquired by Krispy Kreme, but that acquisition coincided with the Atkins_Diet low-carb craze, and stores began closing almost immediately after the purchase.
In 2004, the last stores left in the chain, including two in Rochester, were transferred to Great Harvest Bread Company. They were rebranded as Great Harvest Bread Store locations in 2006.
