Rich Port at the Public Market, 3-2008
Former Location |
280 North Union Street, Rochester, NY 14605 |
Status |
CLOSED as of 2008 |
The Rich Port Bakery was a Puerto Rican bakery once located in the Public Market and at Corn Hill Landing. The Rich Port Bakery was well-known in Rochester for its pastries, hot sandwiches, and breakfast fare. Citing low business volume and lack of good parking, the Corn Hill Landing location closed in March of 2008. The Public Market location closed without public explanation in March of 2009. The equipment from the Public Market location was sold at an auction held on March 10th, 2009. With this auction, a relocation or reopening seems unlikely (see also the Chow Hound section of the City Newspaper). The former Corn Hill Landing location is now occupied by Chayote Mexican Cuisine.

2006-09-05 09:57:20 My wife and I are "foodies" on a budget..Rich Port is with a doubt one of my favorites places to eat. Their pastries are excellent and unique. Their tacos and combination plates are top notch, wonderfully nuanced and an excellent value. Highly recommended. —DevinWiesner
2006-09-05 10:00:15 A new location is opening soon at Corn Hill Landing..I believe the opening is around the 14th of September. —DevinWiesner
2006-09-14 14:00:09 The BF is enamored with their coffee and goods and we found ourselves up close and personal with the glass windows at the Corn Hill location under construction. Can't wait. —ChristineLeo
2006-09-21 14:04:54 I stopped by the new Corn Hill location for breakfast. I had a delicious croissant, and everything else looked very good. Soon they'll be serving food in addition to pastries and bread, but they need to get the permits worked out first before they can use the kitchen in the new location. The decor was nice—there's an upper level with some tables and chairs. As a side note, I love how the gym is located right between a pastry shop and an ice cream shop :) —RachelBlumenthal
2006-11-21 10:49:57 I ate lunch at the Corn Hill Landing location yesterday. Very warm, clean and inviting. I had the Cuban Sandwich which was fantastic. I ordered the large which would easily serve 2. I'll be going back. —DaveSmith
2007-02-10 12:44:14 We miss Omar and Mia Ramos in the back. They have moved next door (where there is no place to sit!). Now the tacos at Rich Port are ok, but impossible to eat - they are too full! Of course everything else there is fabulous. It would be nice if they occasionally cleaned the tables between patrons. —CindyKin
2007-02-11 21:14:04 Rich Port at Corn Hill almost deserves its own page here so that it can be listed as a cafe. It's a completely different vibe. Best Cuban sandwiches and chocolate croissants, period. They are also pretty cool with letting you hang out for hours on the purchase of a pastry and a coffee. The lack of Wifi access at Corn Hill is puzzling, though, especially considering that the nearby Corn Hill Creamery and Siam boast free Wifi. —AlixHamilton
2007-02-19 11:02:37 I have loved the farmers' market location for a long time now for their delicious pastries and you can't beat the price with many desserts under $1. Recently we tried out the new location and Corn Hill Landing and I am smitten. The cuban sandwich is amazing and the large size feeds two people. I loved the feel of the place and agree that free Wifi could make this a very popular destination. —EllenKelsey
2007-02-26 14:20:48 I had a rough morning waiting for AAA after locking my keys in the car with the car running. After that got sorted out, I headed over to Rich Port and my stress melted away as I enjoyed an appropriately named "tasty chicken empanada" and listened to Bamboleo. The empanada was amazing and really brightened my day! They cater lunches—stop by for a menu. —RachelBlumenthal
2007-08-17 12:42:50 Rich Port at Corn Hill has incredible Chocolate Croissants. The workers are also incredibly friendly and generous. One night, me and my fiance went to Rich Port, but they had just locked the doors. The worker opened the door and invited us in to buy some pastries. When I asked if they take credit card, he said the machine was turned off but I could take home the pastries without paying. I was surprised by his generosity, but I declined to take them. Overall, a great shop. —DaRoc
2007-09-25 12:00:49 Rich Port at Corn Hill Landing has some amazing food and a great atmosphere. Ive never had a bad meal there. —MrRochester
2007-10-30 15:45:26 I love the Corn Hill location. People who bemoan the lack of good Latin-American fare in Rochester, look no farther! The food is delicious, the prices are incredibly reasonable, and the atmosphere is great. Spread the word about the newer location, it's the Public Market plus so much more. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. —AliMcGhee
2007-12-05 21:41:56 Delicious but slow. —QuincyCat
2007-12-11 23:16:31 I've been to the Corn Hill location twice. First time I ordered a cheese empanada plate which looked tasty, but when I got back to work I discovered they'd given me a chicken empanada instead of cheese...a bit problematic for my vegetarian self.
However, I got a veggie taco plate there for lunch today and it was very good. The baked goods all looked delicious, too! I'm sure I'll be back. —ChelseaAllinger
2007-12-15 10:18:33 Stopped in the public market location this morning. Some of the creations behind the glass looked tempting, but I wasn't in an experimental mood, so played it safe and purchased a cinnamon roll.. Not bad—could have been a little moister, but that might not be their speciatly.
What would you recommend I try next time pop in for a breakfast treat? —MrPhil
2007-12-15 14:30:34 Phil - the Guava Cheese Bread is what you want, trust us.... —DottieHoffmann
2008-02-29 02:54:46 Nice and clean location. Wonderful choices and great authentic food. Certainly in my top five favorites. Very reasonably priced —EllaBeeney

2009-03-03 12:50:43 I believe this store went out of business. I was at the store 2 weeks ago and this week and it was not open, the inside looks cleaned out, and the business hours signage was removed. —JasonTeeter
2009-03-08 13:29:34 Why on earth has Rich Port gone out of business?!?!? We saw the auction in the newspaper this morning. We love their bread and flan and bread pudding! How can they be so busy yet go out of business?!?!?! This morning, there was an article on how this entire area of the public market was going to be fixed up, too. —MaryZeiner
2009-03-09 18:25:01 I am so disappointed they closed! Going to the public market will not be the same now!! I loved the breads and pastries. If anyone knows why they closed and if they are re-opening somewhere else—please post and let us know!!!!! —RocDiner
2009-03-10 10:39:23 A couple of Saturdays ago is hands down the saddest I've experienced, after a dark and near empty place greeted my husband and I instead of the alive, warm and delicious bakery that was Richport at the Market. Unbelievable. Last Saturday were signs for an auction to be held today (Tuesday March 10th). I saw many stools I would have liked, but could not bring myself to go. —AliciaDewispelaere
2009-03-19 23:03:07 They have very tasty burritos. But they have very authentic Mexican pastries. We make sure to go there every single time we go to the market! Very very sad to see the Corn Hill Location close. :( —PrincessB
