I moved to Rochester in May of 2006 from Ellicott City, MD where I grew up. My husband and I are both graduate students at University of Rochester (he at the Institute of Optics and I at the Warner School of Education and Human Development). We're happy homeowners in the 19th Ward and doggy-parents of Dakota, a lovable lab mix adopted from Lollypop Farm. I found RocWiki while searching and searching to learn more about my new home and was instantly hooked! You'll find me putting my two cents in mostly on the restaurant and food pages as I'm a self-proclaimed foodie (but not the snobby kind), I love to cook and eat the best that can be had!
Some of my favorite things in/about Rochester
-
Subs - Subway never really attracted my interest, but my new friends Amiel's and DiBella's certainly do!
-
Parks - I love being able to frequent Genesee Valley Park and enjoy many others in the surrounding area.
-
Wegmans - seriously, if you grew up here, you don't know how good you have it. At first I felt funny about thinking of the grocery store as a sightseeing spot, though.
-
Public Market - I'm a fan of Wegmans, but I've never seen something as beautiful as this place, period.
-
Lake Ontario Beach Park - I know, I know, it's scummy, kinda smelly and at times a bit shady but at the end of that frozen pier, I said I'd marry my best friend. Sentimental value + interesting things to see and do = cool.
-
Geocaching - the "sport" that has lead us to discover otherwise invisible treasures. Think: using billion-dollar government satellites to hunt Tupperware hidden by someone else. Go to http://www.geocaching.com and try it out!
-
Genesee Valley Regional Market - If you've passed the big funny blue and white sign on Jefferson, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Good meat/fish at Palmers, fun spices/herbs/baking supplies to be found at Tadco.
-
No Smoking in... ANYWHERE! NOT having to sacrifice clothing I might have otherwise re-worn to the putrid smell of stale cigarette smoke is awesome. Maryland just recently went smoke-free.
-
Phillips European Restaurant - I'd sooner skip dinner at this place and head straight for dessert.
-
Lots of locally owned restaurants to pick from like Phillips, Jay's Diner, Amiel's, Golden Port, etc.
More to come...
Some of my not-so-favorite things in/about Rochester
-
No dog parks. Why? Lots of human parks, lots of humans with dogs in the parks but no dog parks. Seriously.
-
Winter - I know spring fever is just an expression but I actually thought I was going to be physically ill if it had snowed again in March.
-
Behemoth chain stores taking over Henrietta.
-
19th Ward's bad reputation - I've rehearsed my blank stare for when people ask why we live *there*. Boo you, if that's you to begin with.
More to come...

2008-04-17 13:45:20 Hi Stephanie - Thanks for the note. Grad students with a house. Nice. Local is so important. That is why I love the wiki. We check this site first for everything and tell everyone to get involved. Although I should be better at it myself. There is a dog park but I think it's under the radar - at Ellison Park. I've been there with a friend and her dog on a Saturday. Drop me another note if you want details. Have fun. —BigPun
2008-05-09 07:51:37 Stephanie, thank you very much for your tip about Palmer Food. We had a very good steak yesterday, and excellent prices too! —AndreaCogliati
2008-05-30 11:21:24 Hi, Steph! You commented about my pup Sashi and I wanted to add that I think ours has a little doberman in her, in addition to the pit and chocolate lab. A fascinating combination, as she's both the bravest dog and the biggest baby I know. Lollypop is doing great work... we have three dogs from there now :) :) —MariahBetz
2008-05-30 11:24:50 Oh yes, and Ellison Park has a nice dog park next to the bridge. —MariahBetz
2008-09-29 13:04:51 Candlelight Ghost Walks are already on RocWiki, don't know how you edit the Event Boards entries.
2008-10-01 20:44:19 Hi Stephanie. I was not meaning to delete them, just that it is nice to link the information to the RocWiki page, since an entry is there and the link will give others a connection to both items. I have not taken time to look at how the entries are posted or can be edited myself.
2008-10-30 17:11:38 So nice to meet you also! Hope the "season" has been good for you! —DawnNicoleJohnson
