Fair trade is an "organized social movement and market-based approach that aims to help producers in developing countries to make better trading conditions and promote sustainability." Fair trade in the coffee industry has recently become a matter of controversy. Local Third Wave baristas recommend avoiding coffee labeled "fair trade" entirely and purchasing direct_trade instead.¹ Direct trade coffee is purchased by the individual coffeehouse itself directly from the farmers who grow it. In most cases the shop owner has actually visited the farm and maintains regular communication with the producers. The following lists local sources of both fair trade and direct trade coffee.
