In the Rochester area (and NY State in general) bottled/canned beer is sold for off-site consumption at grocery stores and many convenience stores. All have the common national brands and some are developing a broader selection of craft-brewed beers. To ensure a broad selection of international favorites and microbrews, try the "beer stores/superstores" noted below.
With the great expansion of craft-brewed beer in recent years, bars that feature this style will often sell half-gallon "growlers" (i.e., fancy reusable capped jugs) of their current draught offerings for you to take home. See especially the bars noted below known for their microbrew draught selection or the broader list of bars in general. Growlers of their own beer are also generally available at the local breweries listed below. This is often the best option for the freshest selection.

2005-11-22 05:28:40 genny cream isn't bad, not amazing but better than a lot of cheaper beers. I'm just a bit concerned whenever I drink it that I'm drinking from the Genesee River...where do they get their water anyway? —RossHattori
2005-11-22 06:21:20 Genesee uses city water, and they used to get it all from Hemlock Lake (there were ads proclaiming that back in the days). Nowadays, it's either Lake Ontario or Hemlock Lake, depending on the demand (the northern part of the city usually gets Lake Ontario water, the southern part usually Hemlock Lake). —GeorgeHaberberger
2005-11-22 19:38:05 It's the same water they contract brew Sam Adams with. There aren't enough minerals to make the water particularly distinctive, which is perfect when you're brewing a variety of beers. —TomMaszerowski
